Should we be selling beach cruisers without fenders?

August 1st, 2007 · 12 Comments

Most of our customers buy bicycle online and have it shipped to them by FedEx. Each bicycle comes in the carton box and fenders are included in the price. The problem we are having is that FedEx doesn’t handle the packages very carefully.

Each box should be handled, stored and transported in vertical position. Arrows on the box show which side should be on the top. But the problem is that FedEx (or any other courier service) doesn’t really pay attention and transport the boxes anyway possible. Boxes become very often damaged during the shipping and fenders are probably the most sensitive part on the bike which gets damaged.

We could ship fenders separately, but the problem is that shipping cost to customer increases by another $15-$20. Do you have any advice for us? Is it better risk and include fenders for free in the box. Or raise the price for customers who wish to have fenders and ship them separately? Do you care much about fenders on your beach cruiser?

    I have purchased used BC’s for $25 to $45.
A new BC for for $95 is a deal.
I load my bikes in my truck and take them to the beach and expect them to get scratched, even though I’m very picky about my stuff.
Minor scratches and a bent fender is not a big deal.
If people want a showroom BC they should go to a showroom.
I’ll let you know if I change my mind when I order and receive one of your bikes.

    Hi Hector,

Thanks for your opinion. I appreciate it a lot. Let us know if everything is OK once you get your bike. Thanks, John

I love the fender’s keep selling them with the fender’s.
What don’t you try a different shipping company?
if fedex damages your stuff and doesn’t handle things
    right drop them,
I have horrible experiences with fedex and ups
But for some reason, good experience’s
    using dhl.
I guess I ‘ll have to wait and see how bad my fenders are
    when my bike get’s here.

Thanks for the comment. When we were doing research we were told that DHL sucks too. We might give them a try and get a first hand experience.:-)

I purchased the lowrider chopper and love the bike. When the box arrived it looked like it had gone through a war zone, the driver blamed it off on your company not using good packaging. Through some miracle the bike survived with only a few scratches. I searched long to find fenders for it seeing as you don’t offer that option.

Having shopped around a lot, your bikes are definitely the best deal with fenders. A few scratches here and there are a small price to pay, as even expensive bikes only keep looking brand new if you never take them out. And yes, my FedEx box arrived looking as though it had been dropped of a ten-story roof and run over with a Mack truck.

Great deal on the bikes, with or without fenders. Perhaps a solution is giving the customer the option of fenders and then providing a disclaimer that fenders may risk minor blemishes due to shipping. This keeps the customer informed and no surprises upon arrival.

I need a bike with fenders because I ride year round as a commuter. I am also considering your bikes as a good back up. I recommend Frank Bikes in Bellflower, Downey and Norwalk for possible distribution. Lomita seems too far. By the way I don’t have a credit card, so I can’t order on-line.

    Hi David,

You can still order fenders and they are shipped in separate package. We didn’t have any problem with damages when we ship fenders separately. Fenders cost only $12.95 extra. Thanks for suggestions. John

I would suggest putting the fenders in a seperate box that is attached on the inside the the big box.

That would be great, but the box is pretty tight around the bike. The biggest problem is that bike frame is heavy and when it lays on top of fenders it damages them.
